For Portland Cement Zambia, the fight is not over yet. The cement-manufacturing
factory and its legal owner are still trying to fight for the justice
at the Zambian law. The case of Portland Cement Zambia is known to
almost everyone associated with the Zambian corporate world. It was
registered by Dr. Rajan Mahtani almost a decade back. Dr. Rajan
Mahtani, who has made claims to be the legal owner of the factory, is
among the most celebrated businessmen across Zambia. He is known for
his successful companies such as Finsbury Investment, Mahtani Group
of Companies and Finance Bank Zambia. He has also established
numerous entities outside of Zambia, most notably across United
Kingdom, and has continuously utilised his international contacts to
bring foreign investments in Zambia. He is also an avid
philanthropist and social activist and is continuously working for
the development and upliftment of the less privileged sections of the
society. With these achievement, career track and name for social
services, it is hard to pin him as someone who will consider a
conspirator move to gain control over a factory which is not his.
Still, Dr. Mahtani has been continuously fighting for the legal takeover of the
factory from the court proceedings. He has even submitted numerous
evidences, testimonials and financial documents sufficient enough to
prove his ownership. Even after this, it took the court a decade to
provide final judgment to the case.
Even the final
judgment announced by the judge handling the case was shocking to say
at least. The final judgment was made against Dr. Mahtani’s claims.
As a result, Dr. Mahtani has now approached the higher court of
appeal and made an appeal against this judgment.
